Constable Will came and spoke to us about inclusion and bullying

Next Wed, February 22nd is Pink Shirt Day in Canada.

Please wear pink or royal oak blue and help Royal Oak School stand up to bullying! We will be having an assembly and spending the day spreading kindness and positive messages!

Constable Will from the Calgary Police Service came and spoke to Mrs. McDonald's classroom today about bullying and feeling included!
Please speak to your child about what they learned from him, including what is the difference between teasing and bullying.

He is our police constable for Royal Oak School :)

Constable Will read us a book called, "You Are Special!" We talked about how "nobody is better than anybody! Even though we are all unique and different, we are the same and equal!" We talked about believing in yourself and being proud of your uniqueness and not letting words hurt you. We can't be afraid of making mistakes because it is a part of learning! We can learn from mistakes and from each other.
Ask me about Punchinello, believing in yourself and the message in this story.

He asked us "How do you feel if you've ever felt alone or mistreated?"
-We had to use words to describe our emotions. Some things we said were, "sad, lonely, hurt, scared"

He asked us, "Have you ever been bullied? Have you ever watched somebody be bullied? What did you do if you saw bullying happen? Did you know that if you walk away from a bully, you take away the bullies power?"

Then he asked us, "How does it feel when you are included?"
-words we thought of included, "happy, safe, good, joyful"

You leave 'impressions' in your school, your home and community. You leave a legacy and people remember you by that! You all have a responsibility to make sure others are included and feel like they belong.

How can we do this? Ideas:
I WILL....
help others
be a friend
listen
be nice
be appreciative / show that you are grateful
care about others
tell the truth
be positive when you speak to others
be compassionate
be caring
be encouraging
be a team player
work together with others
cooperate
be considerate
be respectful

We each drew our own footprints and had to think about what actions and behaviour we want to be remembered for!

If we see somebody being bullied, go and get a trusted adult right away- this is NOT being a tattletale, we are just helping somebody to make a better choice.
