Reading Strategies, the Water Cycle and Myths!

Here are our Literacy CAFE Reading Strategies we practiced this week for you to review with your child!

Math!
As our final extension to our Roller Coaster project, students were asked to create a 'coaster track' or ride on graph paper.

-We really focused on how roller coasters are designed by both engineers and artists, and that math is needed to do both of those skills!
-we have used graph paper before when creating bar charts, but this provided a new way of using graph paper for addition.
-Students were given the following parameters for design:
1square = 1 second
1 loop-de-loop = 10 seconds

Students were so excited by their designs and the direct use of addition to build something, that they asked to bring home extra graph paper. If you have the chance, please design a roller coaster ride with them, and have them bring it in for Monday :))

MYTH writing and Social Studies
Today we began some IMAGINE IF writing about moving to Iqaluit (The Arctic). We had to imagine:

  • what we would wear?
  • what we might see (landscape)?
  • how we would get around?
  • what we would do for fun?
  • what we might eat?
  • what our house might look like

We also started a picture in our Visual Sketch book as if we were looking out a window from Iqaluit. In our picture we had to draw ourselves, the landscape, 2 arctic animals and something magical. Ask me what I drew?
