math strategy: "tradesies" or...
making 10 to help add or subtract
(mathematical concept of compensation)
Students were very excited to name a strategy we have been exploring as, "Tradesies". This fundamental concept used in a basic addition or subtraction equation can easily be extended to double-digit equations and higher-order math thinking.
Please have a look at this concept in its simplest form. Understanding the basics of a concept help us to extend and use it in bigger ways:

Some of us were then able to take this concept and apply it to not just making a ten, but to looking for Landmark Numbers related to ten, such as 20, 30, 8, 800, 880 etc! Students wanted to share some of their ideas and thinking with you :))
They are moving into using "tradesies" or compensation for double-digit numbers.
SCIENCE:
Units: Liquids and Hot and Cold Temperatures
EXPERIMENTS: We continue to use the Scientific Method to explore big ideas around liquids and temperature. Today we poured water into a variety of different-sized and different-shaped containers. Students made hypotheses as to what the water would do and made observations.
BIG IDEAS:
Water is incompressible

Liquids takes the shape of whatever container it is in
The particles in a liquid are not stuck in fixed positions, which is why liquids flow to take the shape of a container into which they are placed. However, the particles in a liquid are also close together, so they have a set volume and cannot expand beyond that.
Students are grappling with the idea that the same amount of water can APPEAR to be more or less depending on the shape of the container it is in!!
Please discuss with them :)
SOCIAL STUDIES: IQALUIT, NUNAVUT
We finished watching a video about Iqaluit, Nunavut and sketched everything that we could remember about Iqaluit's Land, Animals, People, Language, Goods, Stores, Weather. We also read some books on The People, The Land and The Jobs. Ask we about some of the information I learned. Tomorrow we will continue writing "Did you know?" facts about Iqaluit.
