We were so excited to start our Idea Lab today, which is something I'm hoping to do several times a week with our students. The foundation of this activity is STEM-related, (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), and strives to engage our students to solve intriguing real world problems!
Our first challenge: A Lego Tower
Each table team was given a bucket with the same number of Lego pieces in it. Students were challenged to build the tallest freestanding tower they could. As students progressed, it was interesting to see them have towers fall and then have to think about what went wrong, and try a new strategy! Here are some examples of our work :)
We couldn't decide which structure was the tallest, so students brainstormed and decided to put a ruler across the TOP of the 2 structures to see if the ruler tipped in a specific direction. Which do you think was the tallest?
MUSIC NOTE⟿
We are very excited to have
our Grade 2 and 3 classes participate in an Artist-in-Residency with One World
Drumming from September 11-15th.
During this residency, students will participate in daily drumming
instruction.
At this time we are working towards providing an
opportunity for families to come in and observe the students working with the
instructor on Friday, September 15th. Please
watch for details coming on Monday, September 11th.
We are very grateful to the
Royal Oak School Council and the Parent Fundraising Committee who provided the
funding for this residency. We know that
our students are in for an exciting week of drumming and music instruction!
Please speak with your
classroom teacher if you have any questions.
Thank you!
