Literacy Night, New Math Inquiry, Arctic Centres

MATH
We have begun Grandma Eudora's T-Shirt Factory Inquiry in Math!
The purpose of this inquiry will be a summative review of double-digit addition but also new subtraction strategies. The main strategy will be 'stacking', otherwise known as the traditional algorithm where the focus is on regrouping or exploding out large numbers and understanding place-value.

Students will be forming teams or "factories" where they will package T-shirts into rolls and boxes. Eventually, they will need to consider costs, sales, and shipping calculations!

Arctic Centres

We began using Arctic Centres to start thinking about life in the Arctic and the Territory of Nunavut. We will be looking at symbols and landmarks, animals, climate, transportation, people, geography, stories and culture of this region of Canada. Centres help us to explore a wide range of topics, share what we have learned, be curious and ready to investigate  and come up with questions of our own.

Arctic Stories

Today we read an Arctic Story called "Northern Lights: The Soccer Trails" by Michael Kusugak. We will be reading a wide range of Arctic myths and stories to create a framework for our own writing.
