Properties of Water (what shapes can it take?)

ATTENTION ALL PARENTS IN MS. MCDONALD'S CLASS!

Our class is so excited for an amazing out of classroom experience coming up! I am beginning to take names for parent volunteers who would like to join us for 1 day or all 5 days at our  Campus Calgary Open Minds program at the STEM Lab at the University of Calgary! Please email Mrs. McDonald at snmcdonald@cbe.ab.ca as soon as possible with the dates you are able to help us with. We will require 4 volunteers for EACH day to make this field trip possible, CBE Volunteer Clearance is required. Students will depart from and arrive at ROS at the same bell times as normal.

We will be gone ALL DAY on the following dates:
Monday, February 26th, 9:10-3:50
Tuesday, February 27th, 9:10-3:50
Wednesday, February 28th, 9:10-3:50
Thursday, March 1st, 9:10-3:50
Friday, March 2nd, 9:10-12:50
I will compile all the volunteer requests and get back to you to confirm your dates by next Monday, February 5th- thank you for volunteering your time!

SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS:

We continue to use the Scientific Method to explore big ideas around liquids and temperature. Today we poured water into a variety of different-sized and different-shaped containers. Students made hypotheses as to what the water would do and made observations.

BIG IDEAS:

Water is incompressible

Most liquids, water included, are almost perfectly incompressible. This is the principle behind hydraulics.
Liquids take the shape of whatever container it is in
The particles in a liquid are not stuck in fixed positions, which is why liquids flow to take the shape of a container into which they are placed. However, the particles in a liquid are also close together, so they have a set volume and cannot expand beyond that.

Students are grappling with the idea that the same amount of water can APPEAR to be more or less depending on the shape of the container it is in!!
Please discuss with them :)

Here are some vocabulary words that we have been reading, writing, understanding the meaning of while also focusing on proper spelling!
