New math strategy (traditional algorithm)... STACKING!

STACKING! (stacked equations with regrouping) Many of us are familiar with the concept of stacking, otherwise known as the traditional algorithm for addition and subtraction. Students have had lots of opportunities to count, add and subtract numbers this year, create equations, explore numbers between other numbers, and numbers within place-value. With this knowledge in hand, students are just beginning to use 'stacking' to add and subtract! The initial focus is going to be on regrouping with purpose and understanding, through a deepening knowledge of place-value. IMPORTANT! Wednesday is Storybook Character Dress Up Day- see ideas

Wednesday, May 10 th : Dress up as your favorite storybook character day at ROS! Please see below for some easy dress up ideas I have posted and given some ideas as to how to simplify them. Please do not feel this has to be an elaborate costume, just a fun way to celebrate reading :) Students are encouraged to dress up as a favorite storybook character and if possible, to bring the matching storybook along at school. Students will have the opportunity to share their stories and costumes with a fellow classmate or friend in another class during buddy reading activities throughout the day. Please remember to refrain from dressing as movie characters or wearing masks. You Can make the Cat in the Hat out of white cardstock and red markers or paper! Charlotte's Web ! PLEASE CLICK ON EACH IMAGE AND DRAG TO YOUR PHOTOS TO PRINT In Grade 3 students are only required to know up to their 5* table. It is beneficial to memorize the skip-counting patterns! In Grade 3 students should be able to skip count by 3's and 4s (as well as 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s)! You could print these out and have a quick "card game" where your child places them in the correct order. In Grade 3 students are required to have number sense from 1-1000. Observe the patterns that repeat in our number system! What do you notice? Do you know how to write your numbers as words?
