Royal Oak is excited to move in a new direction this year! In place of Pumpkinella, students are invited to wear their Halloween costumes on October 31st. Please have students come dressed in their costume in the morning (PM Kindergarten, please come ready in the afternoon!). Please have your child practice getting in and out of their costume so they can independently dress for washroom breaks. We ask that costumes do NOT include: masks, weapons, accessories, or blood/gore. Regular learning activities will continue throughout the day. Students will get the opportunity to share their costumes with each other by participating in a parade in the halls. In keeping with learning about healthy eating, please do not send any special treats or snacks to share. Our Staff is looking forward to the 31st!

We begin our Artist in Residence over the next 2weeks.

My class schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, October 30th at 1:15-2:15pm
Monday, November 5th at 1:15 -2:15pm
Thursday, November 8th at 1:15- 2:15pm
Wednesday, November 14th at 1:15- 2:15pm

With Remembrance Day quickly approaching, Royal Oak School would like to support our Veterans by collecting non-perishable food items. These items will be collected all week (November 5-9) and will be picked up and delivered to the Calgary Food Bank (Veterans branch). There are specific items that are more needed than others and the Calgary Food Bank has outlined these as wishlist items that are greatly appreciated.

October 29-Nov 2 'no excuse' words:
Every Tuesday, students are given 5 new words that come from and are related to our curricular studies. The expectation is that students will 'say, spell and use' these words through their reading, speaking, and writing.

Please review these words with your child, discuss their meaning, spelling, and use. Students will have access to these words around the classroom and on their desks.

LITERACY:
Non-fiction text features chart
Students have been examining how non-fiction texts and writing make use of the following text features. We have been asking ourselves, "how does this help us better understand the information the author wants us to learn and understand?" You can click to download these images to support reading at home.

Social Studies:
We are considering the different 'perspectives' of people involved in the Frank Slide catastrophe. Those of Mr. Frank and the American/Canadian Coal and Coke Company, the settlers and new immigrants to Frank, and the First Nations people who had lived in the valley for thousands of years.

We are writing about perspective using OREO templates (opinion, reason, example, opinion restated). We are reading and gaining knowledge through web archives at the Glenbow Museum, articles, stories, oral stories, newspapers and graphic novels.
