Fractions!
We have begun to explore fractions. First we had the students tell us what they thought was between two numbers. For example, what is there between the number 1 and the number 2? Students gave some very creative replies including, quarters, halves, decimals, mm, and mL.
Next, we watched a Bill Nye video, discussed fractions, and created a mindmap of what fractions are.

Inquiry
Design Thinking
We have been discussing and applying the Design Thinking Process in order to better understand how engineers design structures. We used the story of the Three Little Pigs in order to Empathize with the Wolf, Define the Wolf's problems and then Ideate a number of solutions to one of his problems. After a discussion, the students identified a number of problems that the wolf was facing, such as hunger, loneliness, and homelessness. Then the students got creative and brainstormed a variety of solutions to his problems.
India
Our inquiry of India has taken us through clothing, industry, exports, and transportation. The students are currently working on creating mindmaps of their learning.
Literacy
Engineering Articles
We are currently reading, discussing, and making mindmaps for a series of engineering articles. This week we have focused on how earthquakes affect buildings and how we can make buildings earthquake resistant. Students were extra fascinated by the discovery that Ancient Greeks made their columns flexible in order to allow movement during earthquakes.
