Fun With Dots!

At first glance this seems so simple! But in fact, this is a powerful tool for mathematical learning as we head into concepts such as repeated groupings, multiplication and division.

Using dot cards is a great way to promote conceptual subitizing. Students are given a series of dots that are hidden. Students are then asked to share how they "see" the dots prior to any discussion about how many dots there are. By leveraging spatial reasoning, students can more easily access questions and begin to think about using mathematical operations.

Here are a few examples:

LITERACY:

Writing:

What is a sentence? We discussed Nouns and Verbs!

How do we write 'STRETCHY' sentences to add details and information to our sentences?

READING  / SOCIAL STUDIES:

Using "Think Marks" when we read Articles
How can we interact meaningfully with texts and articles? Here is an article we read!

CAFE Strategy: (C) Comprehension
BACK UP AND REREAD

SCIENCE:

The Glenbow Museum Rock Artifact Kit:
We were so fortunate to rent this kit from the Glenbow Museum where students got to touch and evaluate rocks and minerals. Some kits included Gems, Gold, Geodes, Meteorites, Ammonite Fossils.

We did ROCK TEST CENTRE'S ACROSS 5 CLASSES!

Ms. McDonald set up a Munsell Colour Lab! We evaluated how to find up to 5 colours on each rock using colour codes, magnifying glasses and rock samples.
