Literacy:
This term we will be using the Literacy CAFE and other strategies to develop our comprehension, accuracy, fluency and expand our vocabulary. We will also practice making text-to-text connections, text-to-world connections and text-to-self connections.
We began learning the parts of sentences and practiced applying them in our own writing! We will continue exploring nouns, verbs, adjectives as well as the different types of sentences next week!

This week in literacy students wrote about Orange shirt Day and the importance of recognizing it. We read the book "When I Was Eight" and then students reflected with the guiding questions;
What is Orange Shirt Day? and What does it mean to me?
Social Studies:
We have began exploring India through research on the computers, mapping and whole group discussions! Students have worked collaboratively to brainstorm what they already know about India, what they wonder about India, and have begun using resources to answer those questions and curiosities! We are lucky to have experts in our classrooms who can bring in special artifacts and knowledge from their families to share with us. Thank you, Diya for bringing beautiful traditional clothing for us to admire! We will continue exploring India through the lens of Environmental Geologists!
Math:
Reading a Math Word Problem!
Rapunzel: a Math fairytale :)
Students read 'Rapunzel' and had to solve a variety of problems that could be solved through math. Working in groups, students worked to figure out how much farther the Prince would have to climb if the tower is 564"tall and he had stopped at 43".
We will be working towards a CUBES (circle, underline, box, evaluate and draw, solve and check) strategy that allows students to access a pneumonic device to approach word problems.
Social Studies:
Inquiry into India!
Science:
Students have been finishing up their identification of one rock within the rock cycle. This was a refresher/introduction for students on how to look scientifically at a rock in a 'lab' setting. First modeled in class, students were then challenged to improve their work by following the rubric/checklist below.
Housekeeping:
Congratulations Royal Oak students and staff! Together we ran over 1180 km and raised $674 to be donated to the Terry Fox Foundation!!!!! We are awesome!!!!
