Grade 3 Celebration of Learning
Thursday, March 5th, 6-7pm (please stay tuned for an information sheet coming home soon!)

Needed:
Please send recyclable cardboard, tape, duct tape for our upcoming house-building unit!

Math:
This week we applied our knowledge of shapes, attributes, and measurement to begin making blueprints as architects do. We were again inspired by our "Builder Brothers: Big Plans" story! Our plans include measuring lines for Perimeter and accuracy.

We continue to practice to use a ruler to measure in cm. We have also used 1cm. graph paper. This helps us to measure:
-with accuracy
-with straight lines
-examine angles
-calculate perimeter

Writing:
Students completed their good copies of their stories and are now reflecting on their writing process. Here is an interesting article I came across that explains how our Grade Three's are working through their writing!

What are the Different Stages of the Writing Process

Writers have their own writing process as per their preference and they follow those steps naturally. Whenever they get stuck with some tough topics, they follow the steps which are familiar to all to stimulate their ideas in the right manner. It starts with prewriting and ends with publishing. However, 5 basic stages of the writing process are prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. Each stage is precisely discussed here to represent a clear perception about the entire process of writing.

Prewriting: Prewriting is important as it is the first stage, where a writer chooses the topic and narrows down the points as well as determines the purpose of their writing.  The next step is to plan and structure your idea.
Drafting: Drafting putting your points and ideas on paper and arranging these points in a readable manner. Writers usually research about their topics at the prewriting stage and then they accumulate the entire information at this stage. First, the writers prepare a rough draft.
Revising: Revising is another imperative stage, where a draft is scrutinized thoroughly and words and sentences in the draft are rearranged. At this stage, details and words are added and some are replaced and removed as per the requirements. However, revision is indispensable to make the writing catchy.
Editing: Finalize the tone of the writing and check each line thoroughly. Check spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, document format, and other things.
Publishing: Publishing is the last stage where writers submit their work to the reader.

Reading:
Ask your child about the article below: Inca Architecture (you can save or drag these images into your photos and view from there as well!) and the Think Notes that they took!

Science:
We read the book, "Iggy Peck Architect" as an introduction to architecture and to continue the design thinking process all the way to "Prototype and Test". Students were challenged to build a bridge that would hold 10 unifix cubes with just one piece of paper, 1 metre of masking tape, 2 elastics and 2 paperclips!

Congratulations to Mika, Olivia, and Seohyoen whose bridge held 11o cubes! WOW
